Please get off the ship and take the $5.00 cab ride into Mahahual and spend a few hours. Gifts, lunch and drinks cost much less then at the port. The water and white sand are much nicer then sitting around a pool at the port. You can also book any of your shore excursions beforehand online. Check out the tour operators today!
The Costa Maya is an easy 3.5 to 4 hours from the Cancun Airport. The new highway from the airport to Mahahual and The Costa Maya has been completed and there are plenty of gas stations, food and drinks along the way. We do recommend not driving at night. The reason for this is that there are no street lights on the highway south of Tulum and it’s very difficult to see the road.

At last count there were around 15 restaurants and bars in and around Mahahual. So don’t worry, you will always be able to get fresh fish, tacos and cold drinks day or night. We enjoy spending the day in town on the beach. We like to watch the excitement and music at lunch time. If you want a more relaxing time, then wait for the cruise ship to leave port. This is the time to sit and relax on your own beach. Take the time to enjoy dinner and a cold drink.
To truly see the Costa Maya, travel by car from Cancun. There are many places to rent in and around Mahahual.
